Thank you to everyone who attended Reach for the Stars. Your support helps ensure community members facing the effects of cancer can go through the Cancer Wellness Scholarship Program.

When you buy a star or attend Reach for the Stars, the proceeds provide scholarships for the Queen’s Cancer Wellness Program. The program combines exercise, nutritional counseling, psycho-social and spiritual support to help a cancer patient while undergoing treatment. The program also helps cancer patients with the side effects of cancer treatment. Currently, the program is not reimbursed by insurance or governmental assitance.

Calling all Cancer Survivors- We Need Your Help

The 17th Annual “Reach for the Stars” Luncheon and Fashion Show, benefiting the Cancer Wellness Program at Queen of the Valley Medical Center, is planned for Saturday, April 24, 2010.

This event is a “celebration of life” because all of the models are women, men and children who are receiving cancer treatments or are cancer survivors. This fundraiser showcases positive role models for our community and increases public awareness around all types of cancer.

We are looking for a few commited fashion models for this year’s event. If you are interested, please contact the Queen of the Valley Medical Center Foundation’s Special Events Office at (707) 251-1882 for further information and to receive a model application.

What On Earth is the Circle of Friends?

The Circle of Friends is a group of loyal and generous donors who support the mission of Queen of the Valley Medical Center with regular annual gifts. There are no dues or fees to join and membership is open to all who make cash gifts of $500 or more during the year.

Friends are invited to select health education events, highlighted by an exclusive members-only reception held each year in a unique Napa Valley location. Each reception is highlighted by an informative healthcare discussion featuring physicians practicing at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. This year’s reception is no exception. It will be held at the new Dominari Winery and the topic will be “Plans for a Neuroscience Program” on Thursday, February 18^th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.

Maxine Jacobs, the volunteer Chair of the Circle of Friends, says “Joining Circle of Friends is a ‘moving’ way for me to give to the Queen. It helps to know that my money is going to something that will benefit the community.”

“The annual reception is not only fun, but educational and entertaining,” says Maxine. “It’s interesting to find out what the physicians offer in the way of new technology at the Queen. The members seem to get so much out of it. There were so many questions at the last one; we almost went over our time limit! It’s also a way to meet with the Foundation Board members one-on-one.”

In addition to a reception, basic Circle of Friends’ benefits include invitations to other healthcare presentations, recognitions in Foundation publications, a membership card, a lapel pin and flowers upon admission to the Medical Center.

Learn How Our daVinci Robotic System Saves Lives…From The Doctors Who Use It

“Our daVinci Robotic Surgical System makes it possible to do a wide variety of open-heart procedures using minimally invasive techniques, says Dr. Ramzi Deeik. “Procedures that used to require large incisions to expose the heart and major blood vessels can now be accomplished through tiny incisions. Patients are often able to go home the following day and back to normal activity within a week. That leads to better outcomes and improved patient satisfaction, two priorities for all of us here at the Queen.”

At only 40, and a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, Earl Scott had been a fitness buff his entire life. In November 2007, he noticed shortness of breath and his wife urged him to get a physical. Scott recalls, “The tests came back negative and after I started taking aspirin on a regular basis, the symptoms went away. So I wasn’t worried.” In April 2008, the symptoms returned but more severe. Test results at the Travis Air Force Base ER, indicated he had suffered a mild heart attack. He was transferred to the Queen of the Valley Medical Center for more tests. At the Queen, a plaque deposit was found in Scott’s anterior descending coronary artery. He was scheduled for a robotically assisted coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), to reopen the blood vessel. “I was glad I qualified for the minimally invasive procedure,” Scott says. He recalls, “I spent one night in the hospital. The next morning all the tubes and wires were removed and by noon I was up and walking around. I was back to moderate exercise in a few weeks and in a few months I was back to work and my normal workout routine.”
